Massachusetts Department of Transportation(MBTA) has officially approved the purchase of 284 subway trains from China CNR Corporation Limited ("China CNR") to service Boston metro's red and orange lines.
These rapid transit vehicles include 152 orange line and 132 red line vehicles.
Previously, rail transit equipment from China CNR has won contracts in Asia, Europe, Africa, North America, South America and the Oceania. This is the first time that a Chinese rail transit equipment company has won a global tender in the U.S.
A representative of the Office of the State Governor of Massachusetts told journalists from People's Daily that the tender opened a year ago and six companies from all around the world took part in the bid. Evaluated on the basis of technology, manufacturing experience, production performance, quality and price, China CNR eventually won the tender with the lowest bid of USD 556 million.
The vehicles will be bullet trains made of stainless steel. Red line trains are built to a higher standard than those for orange lines. Their average speed is 102 kph. If maintained properly, the trains are designed to run 129,000 kilometers a year and will last for at least 30 years. The structural strength and control safety of the trains meet U.S. standards.
