Chen is a historical figure with so distinctive features, as long as the actor looks relevant materials up with one night, he will be able to play with a similar appearance. But if he cannot understand the inner world and living habits of Chinese scholars in the past, he will not be able to portray the character vividly.
The "famine refugees" in the movie Back to 1942 are generally not thin. Although the actors and actresses all claimed to have tried to lose weight prior to the shooting, the effect can hardly be complimented. Many of them have made amazing efforts to reduce weight for shooting movies in the history. Such health-harming and almost life-risking acts are supported by their personality and professionalism, embodying the respect that a filmmaker has for the career and the public, and reflecting the ethics and professional quality of the artist.
The "artificialness" in Chinese movies is mostly not intentionally caused by the filmmaker, nor is it due to lack of funds. The root of the problem is that we lack the ability to be "true".
Feng Xiaogang is not a little-known director in China, but a "top notch". We have enough reasons to measure and expect his movies in accordance with "the standards for internationally outstanding movies". Otherwise, Chinese movies would be further beyond hope.
