Egyptian Security Forces have clashed with supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi at the Republican Guard Headquarters in Cairo. And Egyptian State TV says the death toll has now risen to 42.
An Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman said initial reports also indicated that at least 322 protesters were wounded. A military spokesman said gunmen opened fire on troops at the Republican Guard building, killing at least five pro-Morsi demonstrators and one officer.
However, the Muslim Brotherhood and a witness at the scene said military forces opened fire at dawn on the protesters outside the building. The different accounts could not be reconciled. Meanwhile, Egyptian army tanks were deployed in downtown Cairo as protesters gathered in Tahrir Square. Morsi supporters have vowed to die to see him reinstated.
