BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhuanet) -- Typhoon Soulik is now approaching Taiwan at a speed of 20 kilometers an hour. It’s expected to hit the north of the island late today, and then continue across the strait to East China’s Fujian province.

Soulik weakened overnight, and China’s Central Meteoriological Center has downgraded the typhoon from super to strong. But it’s still expected to be the strongest typhoon to sweep East China in mid-July in three decades.


Heavy rain is forecast by noon for the north of Taiwan, and torrential rain for the south later today. Huge waves, fierce winds and torrential rain are to hit Fujian province at noon on Saturday.

Typhoon alerts have been issued, as well as warnings about possible landslides. All fishing boats in Fujian and neighboring Zhejiang Province have been told to return to port and residents have been asked to stay at home.
