Chinese graduates from US colleges and universities usually have a greater range of career choices available to them. According to Blumenthal, many Chinese graduates choose to come back to China and devote themselves to China's higher education, giving other Chinese students access to American educational resources.

China and the US recently reached an agreement on adopting a new extended visa policy, which according to Blumenthal will be another positive factor encouraging more Chinese students to come to the US to study. Instead of worrying about their visa, Chinese students can have more time to focus on their studies in the US. Blumenthal believes that the number of Chinese students coming to the US will continue to rise.

Most Americans tend to opt for short-term overseas courses. An American student told journalists that language is the biggest obstacle for American students studying in China since they do not learn a second language until high school.

According to the Open Doors report, the number of US students who studied abroad for credits received back home increased by two percent to 289,408 students in 2012/13. Fewer than 10 percent of all U.S. college students study abroad at some point during their undergraduate years. By 2020, this number will have doubled. More and more American students will come to China to study.
